Keto, Carnivore, Vegan . . . he’s tried ’em all. What does his blood work say?

Keto, Carnivore, Vegan . . . he’s tried ’em all. What does his blood work say?

In my last post I talked about the Carnivore diet being used as an elimination diet by some people who suffer from severe autoimmune conditions. As well, it is gaining popularity with body builders due to its effects on body composition and overall energy among other things. I mentioned Steve Rimmer of SHREDucated.com trying this controversial diet and included a short video of him describing the results both positive and negative.

But Steve did not just try the Carnivore diet. He has also tried the Vegan and Keto diets and has monitored the results – each for a 30 day trial. Interestingly, his testosterone went down while his LDL cholesterol went up when following a Carnivore diet. On a Vegan diet his testosterone rose and his LDL went way down. Below is a short clip of him comparing his results on a Vegan versus a Carnivore diet.

On a Keto diet his testosterone went up and his B-12 levels were “off the charts“, but his LDL also significantly increased. Currently he is trying the Flexible diet. The gist of this diet is “as long as you eat the right amount of protein and calories, you can eat carbs and fat in any ratio and from whichever sources you prefer.” His results on this diet are not yet available. Steve also experimented a bit with the Paleo diet but not to the same degree as the others.

One commenter on the above video noted that 30 days isn’t long enough to tell us a whole lot about the effects of a diet. I agree. It is a very short time period but I still found his differing results quite interesting. Steve replied to the comment stating that he is planning on testing these diets again for a period of three months each. Keep in mind that he is only one person and his anecdotal results are just that – anecdotes. They are interesting but they are not the same as scientific data.

In between the Carnivore and Vegan trials Steve waited about a month where I assume he would have eaten his normal diet. However, he had no wait time in between the Vegan and Keto trials. This guy must have an extremely robust and adaptable digestive system to go in and out of these different diets so quickly. He must also be very disciplined to do these continuous diet experiments. Most people need a lot more time to mentally and physically adapt to a big change in diet. Being a dedicated body builder Steve already had to have a certain amount of discipline so he had that going for him before starting these experiments.
