User Names
When a user creates an account their username will appear in the URL attached to their profile. This URL is viewable by the public. Users should create their username with this in mind. Once a username is assigned to an account it cannot be changed. This is a limitation of the software and not a RecipeNet policy.
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
When you post a comment in the “Comments” section, the form asks for your name, email, and website in addition to your comment. All information is stored in our database, but not everything submitted is publicly viewable and not all fields are required. The following points explain the various fields.
- The “Name” field is a required field. The name you enter in this field will be publicly viewable with your comment.
- The “Email” field is a required field. The email address you enter in this field will NOT be publicly viewable with the comment. The email address is requested so the website owner can contact you if there is an issue with or question about your comment. Email addresses will only be used for those purposes and will not be given out to third parties except in rare cases where it may be necessary due to legal issues.
- The “Website” field is an optional field. The web address you enter here will NOT be publicly viewable with your comment.
- The “Your Comment” field is a required field. Everything submitted in this field will be viewable by the public.
- The checkbox to save certain information for the next time you comment is an optional field. See section on Cookies for more information.
Recipes
Members submit recipes through an online form. Members can also select categories for the recipe and attach an image. This data is sent to the website for editing and is then published under the member’s account for public viewing.
Media
If you upload / submit images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website. To avoid having this info embedded in photos, check the settings on your device with regards to location data and adjust accordingly.
RecipeNet does NOT check photos for this data before publishing and is NOT responsible if you submit a photo with location data embedded.
Contact Form
This site allows users to contact us via an online form. This form collects your name, email address and message. Unlike the comments sections, these messages are sent directly to an administrator and are not published. This data is stored in our private email accounts.
Policy and Agreement Documents
Users who sign up to be a member will be given various terms and conditions and policy documents to read. At the bottom of these pages is a form that will ask users to check a box indicating they have read the page and agree to whatever terms and policies are written. Included also is the user’s name and email address. This information is sent by email to an administrator’s email account.
Cookies on This Site
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

Analytics
Most web hosting companies collect visitor browsing data on behalf of their clients for the purposes of statistical analysis, so website owners can know how much traffic they are getting, where their visitors are coming from, what pages people visit most frequently and what browsers are used. This helps us in terms of technical design and content creation. Our hosting company provides us with analytics data. If you wish to view their privacy policy you can access it here.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Akismet
RecipeNet uses Akismet, an anti-spam service that collects information about visitors who submit comments in the Comments section. Data collected includes the commenter’s IP address, user agent, referrer, and Site URL (along with other information directly provided by the commenter such as their name, username, email address, and the comment itself).
Invisible ReCaptcha
RecipeNet uses Google’s Invisible ReCaptcha to keep spam bots from sending unsolicited messages via our contact forms. Invisible ReCaptcha does this by collecting information about users and analyzing user activity to determine if they are humans or bots. For this purpose your information will be communicated to and used by Google. This method of bot detection means the service is designed to be active on all pages of a website, often indicated with a badge somewhere on the page. On our site the badge is located in the bottom right corner. Invisible ReCaptcha is subject to the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. For more information about how ReCaptcha works, check out Google’s ReCaptcha page.
Affiliate Program Participation
RecipeNet may engage in affiliate marketing, which is done by embedding tracking links into the site. If you click on a link for an affiliate partnership, a cookie will be placed on your browser to track any sales for purposes of commissions.
RecipeNet is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and links to Amazon.com. As part of this Amazon Associates program, the site will post customized links, provided by Amazon, to track the referrals to their website. This program utilizes cookies to track visits for the purposes of assigning commission on these sales.
Additional information
Who we share your data with
RecipeNet does not share any of the personal data submitted by users with third parties except in cases where permission from the user has been granted and in rare cases where it may be required for legal purposes. Data collected automatically via cookies and / or other electronic means may be shared with partner companies for specific services such as Google’s Invisible ReCaptcha and various affiliate programs. These services and programs will be included in this Privacy Policy. As new services are utilized by RecipeNet the Policy will be updated.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information. Website administrators can delete accounts at their discretion. Account deletions may be done due to inactivity, abuse, legal or other issues.
Data submitted via the Contact Form, the Terms and Conditions and / or Policy forms may be deleted when no longer needed or it may be kept indefinitely for our records.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you (on this site), including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where we send your data
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
RecipeNet uses an image optimizing plug-in to compress images and reduce file sizes. This software includes options that transmit user-submitted images to image compression servers in the United States where they can be stored for up to 30 days. User-submitted images that are displayed on this site could also be transmitted and stored on a global network of third-party servers (a CDN).
How we protect your data
RecipeNet is committed to ensuring that your information is secure. In order to prevent unauthorised access or disclosure, we have put in place suitable physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.
Children’s Information
RecipeNet does not knowingly collect any personally identifiable information from children under the age of 16. If a parent or guardian believes that this site has personally identifiable information of a child under the age of 16 in its database, please contact us immediately and we will use our best efforts to promptly remove such information from our records.
Changes to the Privacy Policy
RecipeNet may change this Privacy Policy from time to time. The most recent version of the Privacy Policy will always be posted on the site, with the date of the latest update posted at the top of the Policy. We may revise and update this Privacy Policy if our practices change, as technology changes, or as we add new services or change an existing one. We recommend periodically checking the date at the top of this policy to ensure you have read the most recent version.
