Essential Oil Spray Cleaner

About

Spray cleaners contain a lot of water so making your own can save a lot of money. Below is an easy recipe for general purpose cleaning.

Ingredients

Water
Pure vegetable based liquid soap
Essential oils

Directions

  1. Put water into a 700 ml spray bottle until it reaches a couple of inches from the top.
  2. Add liquid soap.
  3. Add essential oils of choice and shake vigorously.
  4. Use on kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
  5. Shake well before each use.

Helpful Hints

  1. The amount of soap needed depends on how sudsy you want your cleaner to be. I prefer a quick & easy no-rinse cleaner and therefore use only 1 – 2 teaspoons of soap (just enough to help the essential oils disperse in the water). Use an amount of soap that you feel is right for you.
  2. I use Nature Clean All Purpose Cleaning Lotion in this recipe.

Choosing Your Oils

Choose essential oils that you like, taking into consideration the sanitizing effect and fragrance you want. The following are the two that I use most often:

Oreganol from North American Herb and Spice

Oregano Oil

This oil has outstanding antibacterial and antiviral properties. I use this one in my kitchen because it makes the room smell like Italian cuisine. Oregano oil is VERY potent. I use the guidelines in Dr. Cass Ingram’s book The Cure Is in the Cupboard. Dr. Ingram suggests using 5 – 10 drops of Oreganol per pint (473 ml) of water for cleaning purposes. Note that Oreganol is a specific brand of oregano oil. Most brands come pre-diluted in a carrier oil such as olive oil. If using an extra-strength oregano oil you can use fewer drops.

Tea Tree Oil

I like to use this essential oil in my bathroom. Tea tree oil is an excellent sanitizer and has a clean, antiseptic scent. I use about 20 drops in my spray cleaner and consider that to be fairly strong. If you find the fragrance is too antiseptic you can combine it half and half with lavender or lemon. Both these essential oils combine very well with tea tree. Lavender creates a relaxing mood while lemon is refreshing. I use my own intuition in this recipe, which may be too strong or too weak for your needs. Let your own nose guide you when it comes to the number of drops used. If you want expert advice you should speak with an aromatherapist.
