Morning Fruit Smoothie

About

This breakfast smoothie is delicious and very satisfying!

Ingredients

Grapefruit, peeled (or equal amount pineapple) 1/2 ea
Berries (or equal amount other soft fruit) 1 handful
Banana, peeled 1 ea
Hemp nut butter 1 - 2 Tbsp
Unflavoured green food powder 1 - 2 tsp
Ice 1 cup
Buffered vitamin C powder 1/4 tsp
Protein powder 1 serving

Directions

  1. Place all ingredients into Vitamix in order listed. Secure lid and insert tamper.
  2. Starting at low, walk speed up to high and blend using tamper to push ice into blades. Blend for 30 seconds or until smooth.
  3. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy!

Helpful Hints

  1. There is an easier way to peel citrus fruits than the method shown in the Vitamix cookbook. Simply cut the fruit in half from top to bottom (the reverse of how you would cut a grapefruit when intending to eat it with a grapefruit spoon). Cut the halves into quarters. The peels should then come off fairly easily using fingers. Hold the pieces over the Vitamix container to catch any juices. This is the method of peeling used in some Vitamix show demonstrations. When using grapefruit, remove as much of the white pith as possible as it can be quite bitter.
  2. Hemp nut butter is a complete protein and contains all the essential fatty acids. You can make your own hemp butter using the Vitamix. I have found I get the best results using a Vitamix combined with a simple food processor.
  3. If you cannot get hemp in your area, try adding a tablespoon of an EFA oil blend. These oil blends can be found in the refrigerated section of your local health food store.
  4. An easy way to measure ice: Fill a measuring cup to the one-cup level. Pour into ice cube tray to see how many cubes equal one cup (usually 1/2 a tray).
  5. The Vita-Mix manual says not to use protein powders as they can damage the blades. I called their headquarters to inquire about this issue and was informed that as long as the protein powder is put on top of the ice it should be OK. The container must be cleaned IMMEDIATELY after use in the manner outlined in the manual to ensure no powder residue remains in the container.
  6. Use your favourite protein powder: whey, rice, soy, etc. It doesn’t need to be flavoured for this recipe.
