Stuck with Brussels sprouts? Here’s how to make them tasty.
During this time of social isolation, supplies are running short. Indeed, if you’re at Shopper’s Drug Mart you might not be able to get frozen vegetables – except one – Brussels sprouts! So it would seem that even during a pandemic nobody wants that vegetable! It certainly isn’t one of my favourites. I don’t know what the frozen veggie supply is like at other stores but if you’re stuck with Brussels sprouts, my sister-in law says that her way of preparing them is so good even her kids will eat them – and they are picky eaters.
You’ll need some chopped sweet onion and diced pancetta (or prosciutto or bacon) and maple syrup. Although I don’t often promote smoked meats on this site, a small amount for flavour, in moderation, is acceptable in my opinion. If you’re vegetarian you can try using your favourite meatless substitute such as products from Yves veggie cuisine.
Put thawed sprouts with the onion and meat in a pan. Add maple syrup to taste and sauté until the sprouts are tender and the meat is done. If using a meat substitute you might need a bit of oil in the pan such as olive oil.
This recipe was inspired by one found on 2Teaspoons.
Note that when cooking fresh Brussels sprouts you need to blanch them first in salted water.🍏
