Quick Cranberry Sauce
About
Cranberry sauce is a staple condiment for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. This recipe by holistic nutritionist Lorraine Picot is sweetened with apples, orange juice and a bit of honey. If you are vegan you could swap brown rice syrup or agave nectar for the honey.
Yield: 2 1/2 cups
Ingredients
Apples | 2 ea medium | |
Cinnamon | 1 tsp | |
Honey | 1/4 cup | |
Ground cloves | 1 tsp | |
Orange juice | 1 cup | |
Ground ginger | 1/2 tsp | |
Sea salt | 1/2 tsp | |
Fresh cranberries | 1 lb |
Directions
- Wash apples well and cut into small cubes without peeling.
- Pour honey and orange juice into saucepan with apples, salt, and spices.
- Cook over low heat for about 10 minutes.
- Add cranberries and continue cooking for 10 more minutes, uncovered.
I tried finding a feature photo that has apples in the sauce but no luck! I expect the photo above would look very similar to this recipe – just without the chunks of apple.
All photos with apples in the sauce were called “cranberry chutney” or “cranberry relish”. What is the difference? Well, I did a little research. Cranberry sauce is a simple sauce made with cranberries and sweetener. Cranberry chutney is made with red onion, chilli, sugar, vinegar, salt and cloves. Cranberry relish is made from raw ingredients that are blended in a food processor.

I tagged this recipe as Paleo Friendly. Is honey allowed on a Paleo diet? I researched that too and found an interesting article on one of my favourite Paleo websites. It discusses the pros and cons of honey as a food and concludes that a little bit is OK on a Paleo diet once in a while. The link to the article is below if you’d like to read it.
